A D.C. investigator is facing charges after he was caught on camera assaulting a subway performer.
Harold Christy, an investigator for the D.C. Office of the Inspector General, was charged with misdemeanor assault following his July encounter with two performers on the subway, per Atlanta Black Star.
Surveillance video shows Christy boarding a D.C. subway train before one of the dancers placed a portable speaker near him and started his performance. Christy appeared to yell at the dancer during his routine.
“Turn the got damn music off!” Christy allegedly said, according to an affidavit obtained by the Washington City Paper.
“Get off my train! Don’t do this on my train!” he allegedly added.
Following his rant, Christy grabbed the performer and pushed him against the train door. The second performer intervened in the situation, separating Christy from the first dancer.
Christy proceeded to push the dancer off the subway car as he was deboarding.
After he was charged, Christy took to Reddit to challenge the allegations, saying he was unfairly depicted as the aggressor in his encounter with the “illegal dancers” who were committing “criminal and dangerous activities.
“They ignored my objections and continued to dominate the space with their movements and violent music,” Christy wrote. “When the train reached Waterfront, I attempted to push one of the individuals off the train, to stop the unlawful, harmful activity and because I was in apprehension of imminent offensive contact to me and the other passengers in the area. The other dancer grabbed me from behind and violently threw me toward the opposite door. When the door eventually opened, I succeeded in extricating myself from the car.”
Christy further claimed that investigators were “selectively prosecuting a paying passenger for reacting to rampant, unsafe, unlawful conduct.”
“I don’t regret anything,” Christy told the Washington City Paper. “Because I didn’t do anything wrong.”
