The clock is ticking: Pennsylvania residents have just days left before the May 7 deadline to get a REAL ID if they want to use it for domestic flights or to enter certain federal buildings.
If you already have a valid U.S. passport, a passport from another country, or a permanent resident card—or if you’re under 18—you don’t need to rush. But for everyone else, it’s time to double-check what’s required, gather your documents, and plan your visit to the DMV.

What is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a form of identification that you’ll need to board domestic U.S. flights and enter certain federal facilities as of May 7, 2025.
Do I need a REAL ID?
Individuals who have a valid U.S. passport, a passport issued by another country, or a permanent resident card – or are under 18 – WILL NOT need a REAL ID to fly or enter federal facilities on May 7.

No, you will not need a REAL ID to show proof of citizenship
Can I still drive without a REAL ID?
A standard driver’s license, or TVDL, is all that is required to drive a car in Illinois.
Can green card holders and other non-citizens fly within the U.S.
without a REAL ID?
Green card holders can fly within the U.S. with their valid permanent resident card or passport from their country of origin. Individuals with temporary lawful status in the U.S. that have a Social Security Number may apply for a REAL ID. Note: An Employment Authorization Card is not a substitute for a Real ID.
Who is Eligible for a REAL ID?
You must have lawful status in the U.S. and have a Social Security Number (SSN). This includes individuals who: 1) Are permanent residents who are not U.S. citizens (Green Card holders); 2) Have temporary legal status (DACA holders); 3) Have Temporary Protected Status (TPS holders); 4) Have a valid student or employment visa.
What should I do before I visit a DMV to get a REAL ID?

Can I apply for a REAL ID after May 7?
Yes, you will still be able to apply. The TSA will begin requiring a REAL ID or passport for air travel on May 7, but we will continue issuing REAL IDs after the deadline.
Will my non-REAL ID driver’s license or ID become not valid after May 7?
Non-REAL ID identification will remain valid until the printed expiration date.
What documents are required to apply for a REAL ID?

Individuals born in Puerto Rico may provide a U.S. passport or passport card or a Puerto Rican birth certificate issued after November 1, 2010.
