U.S. Rep. Dwight Evans announced Monday that he will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026, ending a storied career in public service spanning over four decades.

“Serving the people of Philadelphia has been the honor of my life,” Evans said in a press announcement. “And I remain in good health and fully capable of continuing to serve. After some discussions this weekend and thoughtful reflection, I have decided that the time is right to announce that I will not be seeking re-election in 2026.”

Evans said he will serve out the full term that ends Jan. 3, 2027.

“I cannot express the gratitude that I have for the trust that voters put in me as their voice in both state and federal office,” he said. “It has been a privilege of a lifetime to serve as their advocate in government.”

In May of last year, Evans took time off to recover from a minor stroke, according to his office at the time.

In the statements following his medical condition, Evans said that he did not immediately recognize the issue that affected his walking.

He received the diagnosis in early May of 2024 and was in an inpatient rehab facility.

“The main impact seems to be some difficulty with one leg, which will probably impact my walking for some time, but not my long-term ability to serve the people of Philadelphia,” said Evans last year. “I want to help educate people and remove the stigma that sometimes accompanies strokes – many people can recover and continue on with their life and their work.”
