Overtime: Steelers kick off 2025 season in dramatic fashion!

:10—Before we get to the less important stuff, you need to know the real action was at the Eat’n Park in Penn Hills, on Sept. 6, where Achieving Greatness joined forces with “100 Black Men,” Briggs Transportation, Lorenzo Boone Theater, Aimed Human Services and the Penn Hills police force to give away over 200 backpacks and back-to-school supplies to a bunch of great folks. Everyone was a winner. Story and photos in a future Courier edition.

:09—A 60-yard kick to be exact, as your Pittsburgh Steelers opened the 2025 campaign with a 34-32 win over the greatly improved New York Jets, Sept. 7. In a game that has been talked about and dissected from here to kingdom come, the one person who delivered (“as I said he would”) was Aaron Rodgers with 4 touchdown passes and 22 of 30 for 244 yards in his Steeler debut and return to New York, New York!  And, I told you last week about some new Steelers (Jalen Ramsey) bringing mean and nasty….well guess who lowered the boom for the big fumble Sunday? Yep, Jalen Ramsey.

:08—The impressive thing about Chris Boswell’s 60-yard field goal he kicked with 1:03 to go in the game was not just the distance he made, but the extra distance he had if needed. The ball could have clearly gone for 70 yards! He also kicked a 56-yarder early on.

:07—For what it’s worth, we should note that Justin Fields represented himself well. He became the first player since at least 1948 to throw for 200 or more yards and a TD and run for 50 or more yards and two scores in a season-opener.  He finished 16 of 22 for 298 yards.

:06—Back to Rodgers. And really not to gloat…well, I kinda do, hee hee…but as I said weeks ago, unless you have someone better to play the position, I’ll take a four-time MVP and first-round Hall of Famer anytime. Especially when he’s on board for the long run.

:05—That’s all your Steeler good news. Now for your reality check.  #1. Not what’s wrong with the O-Line, the question is, “what O-Line?” As a man who played on the front line, I continue to remind you that everything, everything, everything starts with the O-Line, literally with the snap of the ball! Until that gets fixed, there will be a constant question as to how far we can go.  Aaron Rodgers will only be as good as his front line….period, end of story!  #2. And, you know this was coming…it appears as though we still have major D-Line problems. And it goes without saying the defensive line impacts the linebackers and the linebackers impact the defensive backfield and the hip bone is connected to the thigh bone and etc.!

:04—Up close and personal report. I had the great pleasure and opportunity to attend the final game of the Pirates versus L.A. Dodgers series (with a really good friend) last week and came away with 3 things.  #1.  (Good friends) are hard to come by!  #2. We met two super people who are now our (“new friends,” Beth and her son, Jacob).  And, thanks to Jacob, the Pirates were able to hold off the L.A. Dodgers’ comeback and complete the assignment to get our $1.00 special hot dogs…(because you know who was not able to complete the assignment!!!)  But other than a few raindrops, what a great evening for baseball and on the first base line, no less.  Wow!  (OH, NEVER YOU MIND WHO “YOU KNOW WHO” IS?  MIND YOUR BUSINESS!)

:03—This just in. After reintroducing Duquesne University to the big leagues with a whopping 61-9 win at Acrisure Stadium, Pitt kept the party going with a 45-17 win over Central Michigan, Sept. 6. Next up, the Panthers hook up with West Virginia in the 108th edition of the Backyard Brawl, Saturday, September 13. Then Louisville and Boston College. C’mon man, Google the rest of the schedule, I can’t do all the work for ya!  Penn State stands 2-0 after a 46-11 win over Nevada and a 34-0 thumping over Florida International. WVU started strong as expected with a 45-3 win over Robert Morris and then a shocking loss to Ohio, 17-10.  And this announcement for all you haters on Arch Manning. Going to Ohio State for your opener against the defending national champions is no day at the beach and only lost, 14-7.  Nonetheless, he bounced back to throw 4 TDs against San Jose State. Like I keep telling you, “It’s not how hard you get hit…it’s how hard you get hit and keep moving forward!”

:02—Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka defeated Amanda Anisimova in the 2025 U.S. Open singles…somebody somewhere won in golf and there’s no basketball or hockey. That’s all I got.

:01—Here’s a bit of sporting news…went to the Zoo, too much walking, not enough animals. This one gorilla, one giraffe, no bears, a tired polar bear and waiting in line for half-hour for a hot dog ain’t gonna cut it!!! Other than that we had a great time. Like I said before, you know who is none of your business!

:00—GAME OVER.
