The Hill District: Still waiting for something great to happen

Longtime Hill Resident Leeretta Payne looks out from the ledge at the recently renovated Cliff Side Park Overlook. (Photos by Richard Kelly Photography with Kristi Jan Hoover) Are a new grocery and coffee shop enough? by Susan Jacobs JablowPublicSource Leeretta Payne rises at 5:30 on warm mornings to take care of her Cliff Street garden. Her corner townhouse is similar to others on the block -- red-brick and well-kept. Standing on her street in the Hill District, Payne can look west and see the U.S. Steel Building towering over nearby Downtown. It feels close enough to touch.

The politics of ‘Blackness’

by Aubrey Lynch "Black" people are not Black and "White" people are not White. The terms are used by ruling classes around the globe as an indicator of who is to be favored and who is to be used or discarded. In Thailand, those who work in the fields are by consequence, darker than those who work inside buildings. Those who are genetically of fairer skin are selected for office work while the dark people are relegated to the fields.

Miami Dolphins Incognito shows and office space gone bad

Dr. Jason Johnson The Miami Dolphins have managed to put themselves into the national consciousness again, without even so much as making the playoffs. The abuse suffered by offensive lineman Jonathan Martin, at the hands of his teammate Richie Incognitio has managed to jump from the sports pages to regular talk on morning shows and suddenly you’ve got people who haven’t watched a snap in years and didn’t realize that there was any professional sports team in Miami that didn’t have LeBron James on it talking about bullying, hazing, racism and NFL locker room culture.

Steelers beat Bills in unimpressive manner

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (7) is sacked by Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Jerry Hughes (55) and Buffalo Bills free safety Jim Leonhard (35) during the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013, in Pittsburgh. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar) It might just be me and maybe I see the glass as half empty but after the Steelers beat the Bills 23-10 on Sunday, I wasn’t left impressed. Sure, the game really wasn’t in question after the 2nd quarter but this victory was hollow. The Steelers beat a team who was just as bad as they are. The Bills are 3-6, so are the Steelers. If anyone expected the Bills to put on a display like the Patriots did a week prior, they don’t understand football.
