by Malik Vincent Former Pitt forward Shayla Scott achieved a variety of accomplishments both on and off the court during her tenure as a four-year starter for the Panthers—now comes the next challenge. On Aug. 31, Scott, 22, was named as an assistant women’s basketball coach at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. There, she is reunited with Jeff Williams who took over at the Atlantic-10 school last season after being a part of Pitt’s staff for seven seasons as the assistant head coach. SHAYLA SCOTT “This experience will be very rewarding and I’m looking forward to getting started,” Scott said. “I’m just a few months removed from being one of the athletes. So I’m still very familiar with the academics and the conditioning and everything that comes with playing on the division-I level.”
I have a question for all of you “baby boomers” out there. Do any of you remember the old advertising pitch by ‘Esso’ now Exxon; “put a tiger in your tank.” What about the one thing that we heard over and over again in regards to quenching our thirst, well at least before we were forced to pay for H2O? Do things really go better with Coke? Was Ajax laundry detergent really “stronger than dirt?” All of the aforementioned advertising slogans were meant to do two things; tap into our psyches and our pocketbooks.
Now it’s for real. Right now, at the beginning of the regular NFL season the best team in football is the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last season the Steelers appeared in their second Super Bowl in three seasons. Although they handed the Green Bay Packers the title, anyone who knows football knows who the best team was, even without their star rookie offensive lineman, who missed the game because of injury. by Malik Vincent For New Pittsburgh Courier Allderdice went into week one of the regular season with, perhaps, the biggest challenge of all the teams in the city—playing defending WPIAL Class AAA champs Central Valley in their house on Sept 2. It looked as though the Warriors had met their match, as Allderdice (0-1) held them to only a 7-0 halftime lead, but their 29-point third quarter blew the game open.
:10 How come no one’s talking about Vjay Singh and Phil Nicholson not winning any golf tournaments. And where's that European cat that was going to be the next greatest ever? GET OFF Tiger's back. I 'm just saying. BILL NEAL
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.—The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at Robert Morris University on Friday at North Athletic Complex. The contest was the season opener for both squads. Sophomore transfer Nico Wrobel (Berlin, Germany) notched the Panthers' lone score, a penalty kick goal in the 61st minute. by Will GravesAP Sports Writer PITTSBURGH (AP)—Antonio Brown’s youthful exuberance cost the Pittsburgh Steelers 15 yards on Saturday night. If the second-year wideout keeps producing the way he did in a 34-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons, they can live with the growing pains. by Dennis Waszak Jr. AP Sports Writer (AP)—The Steelers were a team in flux a year ago, their star quarterback about to sit out a four-game suspension. Ben Roethlisberger returned after Pittsburgh went 3-1, leading the team to its third AFC championship in six seasons. Now the bitter taste of a Super Bowl loss to Green Bay and a controversy-filled offseason have the Steelers itching to defend their AFC title. After keeping the core of their roster together, they're loaded to make another run.
(NNPA)—Popular sports giant ESPN drew the ire of fans last week after it ran an online article headlined “What if Michael Vick Were White?” on the front page of its football section. The article, which featured a re-digitalized picture of Vick with a White face, was quickly removed before being reposted Aug. 24. The story was written by Toure, a New York-based writer.
