Out & About 10-30-13

Former Pittsburgh Steeler Lynn Swann and the crew had a great time at the NEED event featuring DJ Grandmaster Flash at the August Wilson Center. This week I visited the August Wilson Center for African American Culture in Downtown Pittsburgh, Galaxy Lounge and Entertainment Center in Homewood, CJ’s in the Strip District and Kenny’s Place in Uptown Pittsburgh. My first stop was at Kenny’s Place in Uptown where everyone came out for the Pittsburgh Steelers Party and visitors from Cleveland, Ohio had a party on the run and they were also in attendance. My next stop was at CJ’s in the Strip District where DJ Tee Jay was on the 1’s and 2’s doing his thing for the crowd all night long.

Nona Marvisa Gaye and Frankie Christian Gaye's suit is the latest salvo in a dispute over Thicke's hit and whether it copies elements of Gaye's song "Got to Give It Up." Their lawsuit seeks to block Thicke and collaborators Pharrell and T.I. from using elements of their father's music in "Blurred Lines" or other songs.

12 Years a Slave: The realest slavery account in a movie ever

This image released by Fox Searchlight shows Michael Fassbender, left, Lupita Nyong'o and Chiwetel Ejiofor, right, in a scene from "12 Years A Slave." (AP Photo/Fox Searchlight, Francois Duhamel) I’ll never know what it means to be a slave, producing forced, free labor, in the United States prior to the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. More definitively, I could not imagine what it would mean to be a legally free person and still be held captive for little over a decade.

Quincy Jones sues Michael Jackson’s estate

This Feb. 1, 1993 file photo shows Pop superstar Michael Jackson performing during the halftime show at the Super Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. by Anthony McCartneyAP Entertainment Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Quincy Jones sued Michael Jackson's estate claiming he is owed millions in royalties and production fees on some of the superstar's greatest hits. Jones' lawsuit Friday seeks at least $10 million from the singer's estate and Sony Music Entertainment, claiming the entities improperly re-edited songs to deprive him of royalties and production fees. The music has been used in the film "This Is It" and a pair of Cirque du Soleil shows based on the King of Pop's songs, the lawsuit states. Jones also claims that he should have received a producer's credit on the music in "This Is It." His lawsuit seeks an accounting of the estate's profits from the works so that Jones can determine how much he is owed.
