PITTSBURGH (AP) – A former federal bankruptcy judge has been appointed to try and resolve the financial problems of Pittsburgh’s August Wilson Center for African American Culture.
An Allegheny County judge on Monday appointed Judith K. Fitzgerald to work with the center’s board. She will have the power to hire and fire staff and have final say over the center’s operations.
The appointment was approved with the consent of the state, the center and Dollar Bank, which began foreclosure proceedings in September after the center defaulted on its $7 million mortgage.
August Wilson was born in Pittsburgh, and a New York city theatre is also named after the late Pulitzer-prize winning playwright.
State authorities say that about$17 million in public money went toward construction of the center.
