    AUG. 29—Nomination applications are due for the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals’ 14th Annual Pittsburgh Business Ethics Awards. The awards are designed to honor U.S. companies that demonstrate a firm commitment to ethical practices in their day-to-day operations, philosophies, and response to crises and challenges. Make It Happen
    SEPT. 3—The University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Social and Urban Research and Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence will host “Make It Happen Mon Valley” from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Homestead branch, 510 E. 10th Ave., Munhall. This free workshop is designed to help individuals determine if starting a business is right for them and how to begin searching for the “right” business for them. An experienced business consultant from the university will guide attendees through the process. Business Institute
    SEPT. 10—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host its Business Institute from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Koppers Building, 9th floor, 436 Seventh Ave., Downtown. Greg Kozera, regional sales manager of Nabors Completion & Production Services, will speak on the topic, “Opportunities for Small Business in the Marcellus Shale & Beyond.” Each participant will receive a copy of Kozera’s book. Women Leaders Breakfast
    SEPT. 12—The Center for Women Entrepreneurs at Chatham University will host the Women Business Leaders Breakfast from 8-9:30 a.m. at the Chatham University James Laughlin Music Hall, Woodland Rd., Shadyside. The topic will be “Business of Making: Strategies for Success from Start Up to Exit.” Illana Diamond, managing director, of AlphaLab Gear, will discuss why Pittsburgh businesses are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the renewed interest in physical products, how small business and manufacturers can get involved, and what resources are available to help physical product founders get their products from idea to market. Certification Information  Initiative
    SEPT. 16—The MWDBE Governmental Committee will host a “Certification Information Initiative” Seminar at 8:45 a.m. at the IBEW Conference Center, 5 Hot Metal St., South Side. This workshop is to provide potential firms with information pertaining to the various types of certifications available to business entrepreneurs. PowerBreakfast
    SEPT. 19– The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host its PowerBreakfast Meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Downtown. The guest speaker will be Robert DeMichiei, executive vice president & CFO of UPMC. He will provide an overview of UPMC and its financials, along with a look at their upcoming plans and community initiatives, their involvement with the Corporate Equity and Inclusion Roundtable, and an update on the UPMC Supplier Diversity Program.
