Finally, a new police chief. Will anything change?
The new police chief, Cameron McLay from Madison, Wis., along with  Mayor Bill Peduto and Public Safety Director Stephan Bucar, said all the right things, but will anything change?
The mayor said McLay “is a student of community policing. He’s studied it. He walks with the people. The rank-and–file will find him a cop. And the community will find that too. He gets out in the community, goes to meetings and then puts a bottom up plan for policing in place.”
I disagree with the mayor about the community-oriented policing. Former chief Nate Harper was a great community relations police chief and did everything that they say McLay will do.  His problem was his position went to his head and he got greedy. The community was well behind him in his police work, but there were many things that frustrated him because the mayor’s office, city council and whoever else determines personnel on the force, kept his hands tied when it came to Black police recruitment.
The problem with the Pittsburgh Police Department is the same across the country in urban areas, including Madison. Rogue policemen who shoot, tase or beat first and ask questions later, and the lack of Black police officers or officers who can’t relate to the community because they don’t live in the community.
This disconnect is why there’s such a high unsolved homicide rate in urban areas throughout this country.
