On a beautiful fall day, with temperatures nearly reaching 80 degrees in some places, hundreds from the Greater Pittsburgh area gathered to walk in support of peace, a community-wide healing, and the need for people to unite and get involved to make a change.
On Sept. 27, approximately 250 people, of all ages and genders, participated in the Northside Coalition for Fair Housing’s 2014 Women’s Walk for Peace. The annual event themed, “Stop the Violence, Heal the Community,” included a walk through the North Side that began at Northview Heights and continued to West Park.
Although there may have been some obstacles—such as a lower budget, new committee members and outreach problems—and a turnout that was the lowest since the walk first took place seven years ago, Ronell Guy, executive director of the Northside Coalition for Fair Housing, said she was proud of those who did come out and the wonderful “show” that did go on.
“It’s about continuing to send a message and letting the community know that we’re still here, we still care about women and women’s issues, and that if you really want to get involved, there’s an opportunity to feel sister love, to feel appreciated and an opportunity to get information so that you can continue on with work in your neighborhood, in your community, on your street, or on your block,” Guy said. “And helping the community to understand that hurt people, hurt people. As a society we’ve been hurt unlimitedlessly and until we heal ourselves, we’re going to continue to hurt each other.”
