PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh police say man shot by four other men in a passing car left his 9-year-old daughter and her 10-year-old cousin in the vehicle he was driving as he fled.
Police haven’t released the name of the victim or the children, age 9 and 10, but say they were stopped in a car about 1 p.m. Sunday when shots rang out.
The driver jumped out of the vehicle and was wounded in the back. The children weren’t hurt, though the car was also hit by gunfire.
Police say the victim was in UPMC Mercy hospital in stable condition.
Police on Monday were still seeking the four men in the car from which the shots came.
Police hope sweater will ID Pittsburgh river body
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh police are hoping a sweater will help them identify the body of a man found floating in the Allegheny River last week.
Police say the pullover sweater is black and has five argyle-style diamonds on the front, two blue, two yellow, and a larger green one on the middle.
Police say the body is that of a black man, about 6-feet, 160 pounds.
The body was found floating Tuesday near the Roberto Clemente bridge.
Teachers in impoverished Duquesne ratify contract
DUQUESNE, Pa. (AP) – Thirty-five teachers in a financially-troubled western Pennsylvania school district have ratified a new contract after working without one for two years.
Paul Long, the court-appointed receiver of the Duquesne City School District, says he hopes to approve the deal on behalf of the district at a meeting Oct. 29.
The district just east of Pittsburgh teaches only 350 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Students in grades 7-12 attend classes in the nearby East Allegheny or West Mifflin Area school districts.
A fact-finder in April rejected the district’s proposal to tie any teacher raises to student achievement improvements.
The district is in financial recovery, so Long must submit financial changes the new contract will require to an Allegheny County judge who oversees the district’s financial recovery plan.
