The Pittsburgh Do the Write Thing Challenge, an initiative to stop violence, presented “Say What?!,” a spoken word event featuring past and present DtWT National Ambassadors, students, teachers, community members, spoken word artists and judges from the Allegheny County Court.
“Say What?!” was held on Sept. 23 at the Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company.
“Say What?!” comes on the heels of the seventh annual DtWT Dinner Celebration in which 8th graders Katie Hanchett, of Woodland Hills Academy, and Anthony Ramsey, of St. Elizabeth Elementary School, where chosen as the 2014 National Ambassadors out of 2,158 students representing 47 schools within the Pittsburgh Public Schools, Woodland Hills School District and the Catholic Diocese.
“Say What?!” participants shared original works based on their own life experiences and about the causes that they are most passionate.
“Say What?!” will provide funding for DtWT’s initiatives to end violence and build bridges of peace between various Pittsburgh schools and communities, as well as expanding to provide new scholarship and mentorship opportunities for the DtWT community.
Allegheny County Family Courts Judge Dwayne D. Woodruff and his wife, Joy Maxberry Woodruff, have served as co-chairs of the Pittsburgh DtWT since its inception in 2007.
