The phrase Black lives matter has been very popular during the last half of 2014. To Malik Muhammad, owner and senior instructor of the Martial Arts Against Violence, LLC the phrase has been his mantra for many years.
As far as he is concerned all lives matter and he works hard at steering his programming to serve as an alternative to violence. Classes in the family oriented full service martial arts academy, according to Muhammad focus on teaching self-empowerment, respect for others; inclusive of authority figures and health and nutrition.
What originated from a sport he was introduced to at the age of eight, some 40 years later has developed into a full-time business. Crediting the sport of martial arts as molding him into the man he is today Muhammad describes the mission of his award-winning Taekwondo Academy as to improve the condition of urban youth by using the martial arts modern philosophy of spiritual insight, physical discipline and scholastic education in order to bring balance to oneself. “We teach martial arts as an alternative to street violence,” he says pointing out that it also teaches the knowledge and importance of one’s own self and the responsibly for one’s own actions.
