Authorities charged Hurbert Wingate on April 8 with the murder of Andre Gray, a Lawrenceville man who had been missing for five months and whose body had been located two weeks ago in the Ohio River in West Virginia.
Wingate, 30, of Homewood and who was originally named a person of interest, faces numerous charges including criminal homicide, arson, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, abuse of a corpse and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
On March 26, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Major Crimes confirmed Gray’s body had been found with a gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide.

It was on Oct. 24, 2014 that Gray was discovered missing after his mother and stepsister could not reach him and went to his apartment. His apartment was found ransacked with traces of blood and the smell of bleach. Gray’s car and dog were also missing. Days later, the car was found burned up in the North Side section of Pittsburgh. The dog was never located but it’s believed Wingate harmed him as well.
Wingate remains in the Allegheny County Jail, where he was already being held on a warrant for an unrelated incident.
