The elected Pittsburgh Public Schools Board of Directors stood by their man with a 7-2 vote that has all my callers extremely happy.
My view? Even though I still don’t have all the details I’m going to do what I said in my previous column. Stand by the elected School Board to make the right decision.
We constantly tell people to get out and vote, how important every vote is and how we don’t have any power if we don’t vote. Well even though most of that is rapidly going in the garbage nationally because of all the money now affecting politics, but it does matter in local elections and the school board is the epitome of that.
What my callers were saying, even though none submitted a letter to the editor as I pleaded with them to do, was “give the man a chance.” All these years the established system hasn’t worked for most or a high percentage of Blacks, so it’s time to go outside the box to try to reach all our students not just a few, or just the majority. Former President George Bush was right when he came up with the slogan “Leave No Child Behind.”
We have been too content to accept the system handed us as long as most of our kids are receiving a quality education or were successful in life, but that has not been the case so it’s time for us to try something different for those who are being left behind while continuing the successful programs.
