Forty-one years ago, the Black Association of South Hills for Women was formed by a group of African American women who were new to the South Hills and wanted to form relationships with other women of color in the area.
“They also noticed that qualified African American high school graduates were not getting scholarships, thus the implementation of our annual scholarship fundraisers,” said Lynnelle Goins, a member of the BASH Scholarship Committee.

Cianni McGhee, Nayah Williams, and Tiarra Carter-Green are just a few of the scholarship awardees for 2019, and they join a long list of awardees over the years that have accomplished great feats in their careers.
This year’s reception, held June 9, bestowed 14 high school seniors with scholarships. Goins told the Courier that BASH’s target high schools include Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, South Park, Chartiers Valley, South Fayette, Peters Township, Washington, Trinity, Canon-McMillan, and Chartiers-Houston.
BASH currently has 25 members, Goins said, and women living in those school districts can find out how to join BASH by visiting www.bashforwomen.com.
