A family is demanding justice after a 21-year-old pregnant woman was shot and killed by police in Blendon Township, Ohio, NewsOne reports.
The shooting of Ta’Kiya Young unfolded on August 24 after police said they responded to a report of a woman stealing alcohol from a local Kroger. Blendon Police Chief John Belford said Young accelerated her vehicle toward an officer before they opened fire at her car window.
The shot hit Young and she later died at a local hospital.
Attorney Sean Walton, who is representing Young’s family, denied that she was committing theft, citing a witness’ account of the incident. The family demanded the release of body camera footage of the shooting.
“Ta’Kiyah was in a state of flight from the moment she was allegedly pointed out to the officers until her life was taken. She is the victim here, and we demand accountability for the loss of two precious lives — Ta’Kiyah and her unborn daughter,” Walton said. “The officer responsible must be identified, the body camera footage must be released immediately, and the officer and this department must be held accountable for his escalation of this incident that led to their deaths.”
