Obituary: Beloved Atlanta Jazz Festival announcer, photographer, and jazz educator Ernest Gregory passes away

Ernest D. Gregory, 72, of Brooklyn, NY, gained heavenly wings on October 30, 2023. He was born December 9, 1950, in Weirton, WV—the son of the late David K. Gregory and Annie Mae (Tucker) Gregory.

Mr. Gregory was a photographer and jazz educator under Wynton Marsalis at the Jazz Lincoln Center in New York. He also worked for the city of Atlanta’s Cultural Affairs Department. While in Atlanta, he was involved in the Jazz Fest from its inception.

Ernest was gifted with exceptional organizing skills, which he used to help plan and coordinate Annual Jazz festivals and other related musical performances. Ernest also worked as an on-air announcer for WRFG 59.3 FM and WCLK 91.9 FM, producing and presenting various jazz programs from the mid 80′ through the mid 90’s. Corporate Recruiting Coordinator for System Corporation in Rochester, NY, a Fortune 500 company that started in Pittsburgh, PA, for RAN Associates, a minority recruiting firm specializing in recruiting minority candidates for various corporate and management positions. He later became a recruiter at Artistic Endeavors, specializing in securing accounting and financial talent.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Della Gregory, Weirton, WV, Minnie Wilkens, Washington, DC, Ethel Day, New Jersey; brothers Willie Gregory, Goldsboro, NC; Phillip Gregory, Coraopolis, PA; Frank Gregory, Weirton, WV, John Gregory, Steubenville, OH and his significant other Pat Brown, Brooklyn, NY.

Mr. Gregory is survived by his sister Eugenia ‘Helen’ Gregory, of Atlanta, GA, sons Quincy Dudley and Dyani Gregory, two granddaughters Dyani and Sa’Lise Gregory, nephew Michael (Theresa) Gregory, McKees Rocks, PA, sister in law Marva Gregory, of Weirton, WV, nephews Keith (Tammy) Gregory, Marc Gregory of Steubenville, OH, Craig (Chantel) Gregory, Clinton, MD, Charles Perdue, James Perdue, Cincinnati, OH, Andre Gregory, Atlanta, GA, nieces Renee(Michael) Rucker, Susan Gregory of Atlanta, GA and a host of great nephews and great nieces, cousins and friends.

Visitation is on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at Mount Carmel Community Baptist Church, 708 North 5th Street in Steubenville, OH, at 10 AM, and a memorial service follows at 11 AM. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Vinson Mortuary, LLC of Steubenville, OH.
