BISHOP LEON D. PAMPHILE
The Functional Literacy Ministry of Haiti (FLM Haiti) will host its annual Pray for Haiti Day on Friday, September 20, 2024.
Pray for Haiti Day is a celebration and reflection on the good work that the Pittsburgh-based nonprofit FLM Haiti does to support and empower the people of Haiti to help themselves.
The event takes place at Lincoln Avenue Church of God, 404 Lincoln Ave., Pgh, 15206. The service begins at 7 p.m.
This year’s celebration, Prayer and Praise 4 Haiti, will feature music by gospel artist Patrick Polk as well as presentations by the Rev. Tony Armstead with Grace Tabernacle Community; the Rev. J. Anthony Gilbert of Another Level Ministries; and Thomas Spencer, senior pastor Lincoln Avenue Church of God.
There will be praise dance by Tamira Wilson, artistic director of GraceMotion, a dance ministry.
Bishop Leon D. Pamphile, the CEO and founder of FLM Haiti, and board chair Birdy Reynolds, will also give remarks that commemorate FLM’s more than 40 years of providing Haitians with uplift through education, health care, and strategic partnerships. FLM Haiti serves communities in the rural, mountainous areas not far from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
The celebration this year encourages our supporters to pray for the work and the workers who advance the critical mission of FLM Haiti.
In spite of the conditions of violence prevailing in the country, FLM’s work is still thriving, says Pamphile.
In July 2024, FLM was able to award 639 participants certificates for completing the Literacy Program; the House of David clinic provided care to about 840 patients including 420 from a recent mobile clinic; and 66 students from the FLM school took the state final exams.
“FLM’s presence in the community greatly contributes to combating delinquency through education and improving the health of the population,” says Pamphile.
The Pray for Haiti celebration is a key time to raise funding to support the medical, education, and technical training outreach that is at the heart of FLM Haiti’s mission. This year support is needed more than ever because of the challenges from sustained political and social unrest.
Groups and individuals are invited to join us for Pray for Haiti Day and reach out to their institutions of faith and community organizations to aid in our fund raising.
The Pittsburgh-based FLM Haiti is 41 years old, and more than 90 percent of the funding raised supports teacher salaries, food to feed the students, tuition relief, equipment, and medicine and supplies. The funding also supports the employment and development of Haitian physicians, teachers, guesthouse staff and more.
