Wendy Williams’ legal guardianship will be upheld following the completion of a medical evaluation that reportedly reaffirmed her dementia diagnosis.
According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Williams underwent a medical evaluation that included extensive neuropsychological tests and brain imaging. Sources confirmed to the outlet that Williams was rediagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and aphasia, a diagnosis she initially received in 2023.
An attorney for Williams’ guardian, Sabrina Morrisey, requested the court extend her guardianship for at least three months, with a current end date of November 5.
According to reports, “complications have arisen” in Williams’ case due to efforts from the former talk show host’s family members, including her ex-husband Kevin Hunter, to challenge the guardianship and the authority of her court-appointed guardian.
Williams has been under guardianship since May 2022, which oversees her finances and healthcare. Public friction between Williams and Morrissey has grown in recent months as the former host has refuted claims of being “incapacitated.”
“I passed with flying colors!” Williams said of mental competency tests during an appearance on Good Day New York earlier this year.
Despite Williams’ statements, Morrissey pushed for a new medical evaluation.
Hunter filed a lawsuit earlier this year, accusing the guardianship system of abuse and demanding a new guardian, unsealed records, and $250 million in damages for alleged financial loss and emotional harm.
While the court has not ruled on Hunter’s claims, Williams’ guardianship remains intact as legal battles continue.
