‘Summer Blues: An Oasis of High Style’

100 Black Men 15th annual Scholarship Golf Classic

The 100 Black Men Of Western Pennsylvania held its 15th Annual Imhotep Mentoring & Scholarship Golf Classic at Southpointe Golf Club and CCAC Aug. 24. The golf classic is held annually to raise funds to support the group’s’ area mentoring program and to provide scholarships to the program’s graduating seniors and awards to the key participating students. This season, don’t penalize your taste buds by placing that routine, game-day pizza order when you can score rave reviews from family and friends by firing up the grill for a backyard tailgate party with all the sights, sounds and smells of the stadium. Football analyst Mike Golic and champion pitmaster Chris Lilly both believe that game-day tastes better on a charcoal grill, and are sharing their favorite tips and recipes. Golic, a former defensive lineman and host of ESPN’s “Mike & Mike in the Morning,” knows how fun game day can be— even off the field and in his own backyard.

Church Circuit…Monumental, Calvary unite for gospel concert

Monumental and Calvary Baptist Churches united Aug. 30 for The Men’s Day Gospel Concert at Monumental Baptist Church in the Hill District to a near capacity crowd. The male chorus from each church combined as well as some of the other choirs. Even though it was men’s day several women also participated in the program as singers and speakers, as did the women come out in support in the congregation. COMBINED EFFORT—The Monumental Baptist Church male chorus and the Calvary Baptist Church male chorus are led by Deacon Curtis W. Price, director for Monumental.

Neighborhood Academy steers students down the right path

Many people disagree with having school all year round or extending the hours a child has to stay in the classroom. But if people would take some time to think of the logic, it doesn’t seem all that bad. The Neighborhood Academy has implemented this method and has been very successful.

Pittsburgh Job Corps takes top honors

Pittsburgh Job Corps finished first at the 19th Annual District Academic and Career Olympics held Aug. 11 in Philadelphia. Myles Case, Xavier Lewis, Ashley McNary, Lorenzo Prischak, Phillip Rose and Sara Tetley, under the direction of their coach, Karen Bobick, defeated four teams from Job Corps centers in Mississippi, West Virginia, Maryland and Philadelphia. Pittsburgh will represent its center at the final, multi-regional competition in Ocean City, Md., Oct. 7.

Register now for October ACT test

Iowa City, Iowa—Registration is now open for the Oct. 24 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before Sept. 18. The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for entry-level college-credit courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards. Every student’s results can be tied directly to these consistent standards.
