Remains found
AP—The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is trying to identify human remains found over the weekend along a busy road in a Pittsburgh suburb.
The bones were found just after noon along Nadine Road in Penn Hills, about five miles east of the city.
Authorities aren’t saying whether the bones belonged to a man or a woman, or whether there was any clothing or other clues that might help determine the age, gender or identity of the remains. They are also attempting to determine a cause of death.
MLK fund-raiser
In an effort to raise awareness for the organization, Moving The Lives of Kids Community Mural Project, and for art appreciation in Pittsburgh, the organization will hold a fundraising event at the August Wilson Center Oct. 24. It will showcase murals that were created this year, including a welcome mural that was created for the G-20 summit.
The organization also works with kids on Web design, music, fashion design and video productions. The fund-raiser will include a live performance by Gene Stovall and the Party Socks, DJ Hidden Gem and Lee Robinson. For more information on tickets and the event, visit www.mlkmural.org.
New gun law
In an effort to prevent access to illegal firearms by minors and criminals, West Homestead Council unanimously passed a new gun law last week that will make gun owners more responsible for their firearms. The new law states that owners must report their lost or stolen gun within 72 hours of discovering it missing.
Violators could face a maximum fine of $1,000 or 90 days in jail if they are repeat offenders. The law does exclude shotguns and hunting riffles.
Other local areas with gun laws include Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg and Homestead.
Driving while wounded
Early last Tuesday morning an unidentified man was shot multiple times and drove himself to the Get-Go gas station on Frankstown Road in Penn Hills, where he called for help.
He allegedly told authorities that the incident occurred in Wilkinsburg, but a scene has not been determined.
The unidentified male was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital with two gunshot wounds to the arm and one in the back. His condition is not being released and the incident is still being investigated.
District plans
Penn Hills Council voted to change the high customer sewage service charge from $30 a quarter to $20 a quarter. The previous charge was implemented in April 2008.
Along with changes in the sewage service, they also voted to let the Penn Hills School District begin construction on its new high school.
Plans include razing the school and the administration building and replacing it with new sports fields and more than 850 parking spaces for special events. It is expected to cost $58 million. Construction will begin in April 2010 and completed by the 2012 school year.
Essay contest
For the January 2010 Black History Month Celebration and to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Citizen’s Bank, along with the New Pittsburgh Courier, KISS-FM, WPXI-TV and Pittsburgh Public Schools will hold the 9th Annual “Expressions of Freedom” writing contest for Pittsburgh Public School students.
The topic is “In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., delivered his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech in Washington, D.C. Write a short essay that demonstrates how you and other young people can fulfill Dr. King’s dream.” Twenty-four winners, eight from each school level, will be selected. All entries must be submitted to a teacher and sent in by Dec. 4.
The winners will receive a savings bond, a chance to produce a portion of their essay and have it aired on WPXI-TV or KISS-FM and a certificate that will be presented at an awards ceremony.
