OCT. 22—The African American Chamber of Commerce of Western Pennsylvania will host their PowerBreakfast Meeting at 7:30 a.m. at the Rivers Club, One Oxford Centre, 301 Grant St., Downtown. The special guest will be Sunil Wadhwani, co-chairman of iGate Corp. Small business workshop

OCT. 23—SCORE, Enterprise Bank, DeVry University and Bridgeway Capital will host the Small Business Workshop from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the DeVry University and K & L Gates Building, 210 Sixth Ave., Downtown. This is an interactive workshop geared toward aspiring and existing small business entrepreneurs. Professionals will discuss topics such as small business planning, record keeping, taxes, financing, marketing and more. Registration is required and a continental breakfast will be served. Quickbooks workshop

OCT. 26—Duquesne University’s Small Business Development Center will host a Quickbooks: Advanced workshop from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the University’s Rockwell Hall, Room 108, 600 Forbes Ave., Uptown. The workshop will help users become more knowledgeable with the program and help them learn how to save time and money through its use. The discussed topics include inventory, sales tax, payroll, business credit cards, job costing and time tracking. This is for Windows users only. Registration is required and the cost is $45. Commonwealth business

OCT. 28—The Saint Vincent College Small Business Development will host “Doing Business With the Commonwealth” Workshop from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at 300 Fraser Purchase Rd., Latrobe. This workshop provides information to individuals interested in doing business with the government. A representative from the Department of General Services will discuss various important topics along with certification of minority- and women- owned businesses. Registration is required by Oct. 26. Business series

OCT. 28—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host their Business Program Series at 12:15-1 p.m. at the Downtown & Business branch, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic is “Property Assessments, Appeals and the Homestead Exemption.” Raymond Garofalo, of Dollar Bank, will help individuals understand property tax assessments, the process for appealing unfair assessed values and how the Homestead Exemption can save money. Employment seminar

OCT. 29—The University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center and Maiello Brungo & Maiello will host the Next Step: Employment Seminar from 7:30-10 a.m. at Pitt’s Mervis Hall, Room 104, Oakland. Michael Brungo and Chad Ellis will lead this seminar for small and start-up business owners that will focus on how to avoid common pitfalls related to building and maintaining a productive workforce. Featured topics include effective hiring and firing, developing employee handbooks, use of independent contractors, how health care reform affects small business and more. This is part of a technology series on marketing and promotion through social networking and the techniques that can be used. Registration is required by Nov. 2 and the cost is $40. Job fair
