Time to stop making excuses…61 of 83 homicides Black lives

With 83 homicides thus far in the year, we are only five away from surpassing that of 2009’s count of 87 for the whole year. Again the list was dominated by killings of Black males and they were all under the age of 30. The life expectancy for Black males is rapidly falling. What message are we sending to our young people?

UnderAttack2

When asking various community leaders, politicians and residents within the Black community what the reason and solutions for the senseless violence, many say, the troubled economy, the lack of quality education, just to name a few. But no longer can we use that as an excuse.

We cannot blame the economy for an individual pulling out a gun and shooting a woman multiple times when she reportedly demands the noise be lowered in her home, like that of Selena Roberts. Or because they have been denied access to a party they decide to pull a gun, recklessly shoot into a home where a party is being held hitting a young man enjoying his time home from college, like that of Jeron Grayson, who lost his life earlier this month at a California University off campus party. Did this really have anything to do with the economy, the lack of a job or education? If that is the case, then instead of a gun, pick up a book, a musical instrument or even an afterschool activity.

The challenge to those doing these heinous acts, before you shoot, stop and think about the lives you are affecting. It is not only the person you kill, but also their family, your family and your own life that’s being affected. No matter what you think, no one comes out a winner. Most shooters spend the rest of their adult lives in prison.

As part of an ongoing effort to heighten awareness about the effects of murder in Black communities, the New Pittsburgh Courier will compile a list of homicides in Allegheny County each month. It is our hope that as the list of victims grows, so will a true understanding of how these lost lives affect the mental health, economic well-being and self-images of the region’s Black neighborhoods.

Out of the 83 murders, thus far, in 2010—61 Black and 53 were Black men.
