Smurfette (voice by Katy Perry) and her little blue Smurf friends have returned again to save their land from the evil sorcerer, Gargamel (Hank Azaria).
Smurfs 2 shows the Winslow family going on another journey to save the Smurfs and their entire existence. Pat and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) recruit their son, Blue (Jacob Tremblay) and Pat’s stepfather, Victor (Brendan Gleeson), to help Papa Smurf and his friends save Smurfette from Gargamel.
Gargamel, who originally created Smurfette, is now a worldwide celebrity performing magic tricks with the Blue magic extracted by the Smurfs. There’s only one problem! Gargamel is running low on his Blue magic and has devised an evil plan to obtain enough of the magical formula to rule the world.
With the help of two naughty Smurfs, Vexy (voice by Christina Ricci) and Hackus (voice by J.B. Smoove), Gargarmel captures Smurfette to get the Blue magic formula. It’s a battle of the nice Smurfs versus the naughty Smurfs.
Smurfs 2 has an all-star cast with superstars like former NBA Champion Shaquille O’Neal, NBC’s The Office B.J. Novak, and late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. All too many times, smaller actors like J.B. Smoove are overlooked. In Smurf’s 2, he plays Smurfette’s naughty brother, Hackus, and completely displays his diverse, charismatic talents.
J. B. Smoove has always had small yet memorable roles. In 2001’s Pootie Tang, he played Pootie Tang’s surly and sarcastic right hand man, Trucky. Along the lines of Norbit, Potty Tang will forever be one of the best, dumbest movies in the world. J.B. Smoove is also known for his role as Larry David‘s Black confidant on the HBO Series Curb Your Enthusiasm.
3 STARS: Overall, Smurfs 2 is a tad bit corny but a perfect depiction for any child with a colorful imagination. Not to mention, most adults can reminisce as they grew up on the wonderful blue world of the Smurfs.
