Land Banking Public Hearing
FEB. 20—Pittsburgh City Council will host an evening Public Hearing on Proposed Land Banking Legislation at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers, the City-County Building, 414 Grant St., Downtown. This hearing is in response to a high volume of comments and suggestions made by community members and organizations relating to the creation of a Pittsburgh Land Bank. Little Miss Allegheny County Open House
FEB. 22—Classic Events and the Michele Goodman Studio will host a Little Miss Allegheny County Open House from 10-11:45 a.m. at the East Liberty Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 130 Whitfield St., East Liberty. They are looking for girls, ages 7-11, to compete for the first Little Miss Allegheny County title. Guest will have training in poise, speech, runway and etiquette. Black History Program
FEB. 22—The McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center will host its Annual Black History Month Program at 2 p.m. at 1832 Arboretum Dr., McKeesport. Book Launch Reception
FEB. 24—A Second Chance Inc. will host the Book Launch Reception for Dr. Sharon McDaniel’s book “On My Way Home” from 6-8 p.m. at the Hill House Association, the Kaufman Auditorium, 1835 Centre Ave., Hill District. Education Conference
FEB. 26—The Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education Inc. will host its 44th annual PBCOHE Conference at the Double Tree Hotel/ Monroeville Convention Center, Monroeville Plaza Blvd., Monroeville. The theme is “Campus Climate: Cultural Identity-Evolution or Digression?” The conference will give attendees the opportunity to examine the needs of African-Americans and minorities in Pennsylvania when it comes to higher education. Gun Safety Discussion
FEB. 26—The League of Women Voters will host a Gun Safety in a Free Society Discussion from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the Kingsley Association, 6435 Frankstown Ave., East Liberty. The evening is designed to get more information about what people want and want their government to do about the gun issue. There will be a meal, along with a panel, group and general discussion. Empty Bowls
MARCH 2—Just Harvest and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank will host the 19th Annual Empty Bowls from 2-6 p.m. at the Rodef Shalom Congregation, Fifth Avenue, Oakland. This family-friendly event is designed to bring awareness to the growing issue of hunger. There will be food, activities, auctions and more. The event will benefit the Food Bank and Just Harvest. Water Polo
ONGOING—The Thelma Lovette YMCA will host Water Polo at 12 p.m. at 2114 Centre Ave., Hill District. Every Saturday in January, February and March the YMCA will offer water polo for middle school aged children.
