A new McKeesport anti-gun violence group is now taking its message to the streets.
That message: we’re taking back our streets.
Take Action Mon Valley will stage a series of marches through McKeesport neighborhoods in an effort to stop the street violence that has claimed hundreds of lives in the last decade.
“We will be walking, handing out flyers, praying and joining in fellowship with the community,” said McKeesport Councilwoman V. Fawn Walker-Montgomery. “We want everyone who can to join us.”
The new group, founded by Walker-Montgomery’s cousin Mae Hudson following the We Need Justice Too—McKeesport meeting held in May is calling on the community to stand up to the killers in their midst, many of whom are known, and take back control of their lives and communities. As she said in May at the We Need Justice Too—McKeesport meeting, someone has to call these people out.
“The young people doing the killings are not being pressured at all by police, and everyone knows it,” she said. “Like someone told me, ‘if you want someone dead, bring them to McKeesport and kill them. They’ll never find who did it.”
The community walks, as they are being called, will be held on three consecutive Wednesdays, with the first on July 16 beginning at Moran Field and proceeding through the Harrison Village public housing community. The second will start at the pavilion in Crawford Village on July 23, and the third will begin at Bailey Avenue by Twin Rivers on July 30.
The group is also finalizing a citywide event scheduled for Aug. 23 at the Health Village Learning Institute at 100 Boyd St. Though details are incomplete, organizers plan to have food, activities and giveaways along with presentations and learning sessions.
