PITTSBURGH (AP) – A western Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to three to six years in prison followed by 10 years’ probation for a drunken hit-and-run accident that killed a jitney driver who was standing outside his vehicle.
Forty-one-year-old Shontelle Harvey, of Moon Township, was sentenced by an Allegheny County judge on Tuesday after previously being convicted of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and other charges.
Police in Leetsdale were called about 3 a.m. Aug. 18 after the jitney driver, 67-year-old Charles Britt, of Penn Hills, was hit along the side of the road. Britt was reportedly outside the vehicle arguing with one of his passengers when Harvey’s vehicle passed and hit Britt.
Harvey later told police he was afraid to stop because he was already on probation for another crime.
Woman gets prison for running down beau with van
PITTSBURGH (AP) – A western Pennsylvania woman has been sentenced to 18 months to 5 years in prison for running down her boyfriend with a van following a domestic dispute.
Forty-one-year-old Demona Anderson, of East Pittsburgh, was sentenced Tuesday. She was convicted in May of involuntary manslaughter in the February 2013 death of 42-year-old Dwan Jones.
Jones, described by his family as a father of 10, was trying to board a transit bus to leave after Anderson called 911 to report an altercation with him. That’s when Anderson hit Jones with her van.
Anderson has claimed that was an accident. But an Allegheny County judge ruled she purposely hit Jones, though the judge believed Anderson didn’t mean to kill him. That’s why Anderson was convicted of manslaughter instead of murder, which prosecutors sought.
