Andrew Frazier, a well-known educator with a passion for encouraging youths and young adults, passed away Dec. 22, just days before his last surviving brother passed. The Stanton Heights resident was 82.
Growing up in the Hill District, Frazier graduated from Fifth Avenue High School and went on to attend Fayetteville State University where he played football and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Upon graduation, Frazier was drafted into the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany.
After being honorably discharged, Frazier returned to the city and began his longtime teaching career, later earning a master’s degree from Western Michigan University. Over his 40 years as an educator, Frazier taught with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and as an adjunct professor with the University of Pittsburgh.
Along with his love for people, Frazier also had a love for the community. He was a dedicated member of Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities. He was also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the Centre Avenue YMCA, Men of Fifth Avenue, the Pacemakers and the Point City Bridge Club, just to name a few. He was also an avid baseball and softball enthusiast, playing in several leagues, as well as a magician. Known as “Andre the Great,” Frazier reached many through his entertainment.
Frazier is survived by his wife of 47 years, Brenda Frazier; his three children and their spouses; one sister; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements were entrusted to Coston Funeral Home, in East Liberty, and a service was held Dec. 29 at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church
