County moves to yellow phase, 12 more counties to yellow next Friday

On its first day of partial re-opening, the City of Pittsburgh announced which summer activities can go forward and which can’t — like July 4 festivities and races.

As Allegheny County and much of Southwestern Pennsylvania moved to the yellow phase of reopening Friday, Gov. Tom Wolf announced that 12 additional counties, including neighboring Beaver, will move to the yellow phase on May 22.

“To Pennsylvanians in the 49 counties in the yellow phase, I cannot emphasize enough that you continue to practice social distancing,” Wolf said in a press conference Friday. He emphasized continuing to telework, keeping six feet apart from other people and continuing to wear masks in public.

“If we continue to see a decline in case counts, we can lift more restrictions and bring our lives closer to normal, so it’s in every Pennsylvanian’s best interest to continue to take social distancing seriously,” Wolf said.

State Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said there have been meaningful declines in new cases over the past 14 days.

“The current load of COVID-19 has peaked in Pennsylvania,” Levine said. “However, some areas of the state have only just begun to experience meaningful declines. It is not the time to stop our efforts.”

She said testing and tracing efforts have gone well in counties that moved from the red phase to yellow last week. Nearly 120,000 tests were performed from April 30 through May 14, she said.

The City of Pittsburgh shed some light Friday on how a number of summer activities will be impacted by the pandemic.

City-run activities that will be allowed to proceed this summer with appropriate distancing measures include drive-in movies, farmers’ markets, tennis and pickleball courts, skate parks, fields (without organized sports) and Frisbee golf.

The city noted a number of activities can’t comply with distancing requirements and will not be held, including July 4 fireworks, city-sponsored concerts, races, city summer camps and Citiparks youth baseball. City swimming pools will also be closed.
