Allegheny County reports 204 new COVID cases, 7 hospitalizations and 6 deaths

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 204 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, continuing a triple-digit case streak first reported on June 30.

Tuesday’s cases bring the total count to 3,979 since March 14 when officials reported the first cases in the county. Health officials also announced six additional deaths from the state’s Electronic Data Reporting System that occurred between April 5 and June 13, all over 65 years and older.

Additionally, ACHD reported seven new hospitalizations.

To date, there have been 194 deaths and 423 past and present hospitalizations.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] on Tuesday reported 995 COVID infections and 33 fatalities, bringing the statewide tally to 91,299 cases and 6,787 deaths.

The case count announced by DOH Tuesday represents “some backlogged test results” and not all recent tests, Nate Wardle, a health spokesman, wrote in an email to PublicSource. A little more than 100 of the reported infections are results from labs reporting cases at long-term care facilities, which include nursing homes, Wardle said.

Gov. Tom Wolf said in a Monday press conference that the outbreak was worrisome. “Allegheny County is the big area of concern at this point,” Wolf said.

The rise in infections now, he added, is an opportunity for the state to learn and prepare for the expected wave in the fall.

“I think this is a good dry run for what may be a broader upsurge in the fall,” Wolf said.

In response to a media question, Wolf, who has been modeling face mask use, also said face masks will likely be required until a vaccine is found.

ACHD Director Dr. Debra Bogen on Friday recommended a voluntary stay-at-home protocol for all county residents to try and prevent further spread of the virus.
