by PublicSource Reporters

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 61 new COVID-19 infections Saturday and two COVID-related fatalities. The newly reported cases bring the county’s total count since March 14 to 9,817 infections. The county has seen 922 current and past hospitalizations throughout the pandemic.

The new cases come from 956 tests conducted from Aug. 9 through 21. Roughly 62% of the new cases were in people younger than 50.

Both of the fatalities occurred on Aug. 19 and were associated with a long-term care facility. One individual was in their 50s, and the other was in their 60s. To date, there have been 306 deaths countywide.

ACHD is no longer reporting the number of new patients hospitalized.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 796 new infections and 18 fatalities Saturday, bringing the statewide tallies to 128,429 cases and 7,576 deaths.

In April, roughly 5% of cases in the region were among 19- to 24-year-olds. So far in August, the age group represented nearly 12% of COVID infections.

Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing 67.6% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.

Roughly 9,276, or 7.2% of all infections, are among healthcare workers. County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.

The health department is working with the Black COVID-19 Equity Coalition in Pittsburgh to create a statewide group that will help health officials analyze approaches to testing in the region
