What’s up with Pitt men’s basketball?

XAVIER JOHNSON, top, left the program on Feb. 24 and into the transfer protocol.

One day later, Audiese Toney, pictured above, decided to leave Pitt, too.

What’s up with Pitt men’s basketball? Why are some of their top players leaving the program? What did Pitt head coach Jeff Capel have to say about this?

“It’s been an interesting week, to say the least,” he said during his radio show on 93.7 The Fan, Feb. 25. “This has been an incredibly difficult year with everything that’s going on in the pandemic…I hope people don’t judge these kids both on and off the court for decisions that they make. There are a lot of factors that go into these decisions. Again, we wish them well, and for us, we’re trying to focus on the guys that we have, and to finish our season as strongly as possibly can.”

As of March 1, Pitt had a 9-10 overall mark, 5-9 in the ACC. Pitt played their home finale against Wake Forest on March 2, and end the regular season Saturday, March 6, at Clemson. (Photos courtesy University of Pittsburgh)
