Police: FedEx gunman fired randomly in parking lot before entering facility

by Tyler Fenwick, Special from The Indianapolis Recorder

Police said the gunman who killed at least eight people and injured others late April 15 at a FedEx Ground Plainfield Operations Center fired randomly in the parking lot and killed four people before going inside and killing four more.

At a press conference April 16, police said they still don’t know for sure the identify of the suspect, but FBI Special Agent in Charge Paul Keenan said the agency was investigating a house.

Police later said the shooter, who appeared to die by suicide at the facility, was a young male in his 20s.

Police said the gunman used a rifle.

Police have not identified any of the victims but said family should hopefully be notified in the next 24 hours. Police set up a family reunification center at a Holiday Inn near the facility, which is close to the airport.

Police also said they still don’t know the shooter’s motive or if he was a FedEx employee.

At the press conference, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Randal Taylor said officers who responded to the scene saw “something really no one should see.”

Mayor Joe Hogsett said Indianapolis is a resilient community. This was the city’s third mass shooting in 2021.

“I know that our residents will rally together,” he said. “The eyes of the nation are on Indianapolis today.”
