TRANSIT POLICE OFFICER

Pittsburgh Regional Transit (Port Authority of Allegheny County Police Department) is seeking full-time Transit Police Officers. A Transit Police Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety of Port Authority customers, staff, and property throughout the areas it serves. Officers must enforce all local, state, and federal laws on and around our transit system.

Our Police Department offers potential career opportunities with specialty units that include, investigations, K-9, video forensics and crash reconstruction. Leadership roles such as Sergeant and Lieutenant are promoted from within the department.

Police Officer applicant testing is one three-hour session, the written police officer exam (POST) and the fitness exam will be administered on the same day. Testing dates: Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at 8:00 AM, and Thursday, July 20, 2023, at 12:00 PM.

As of August 1, 2023, the following Transit Police Officer wage progression is as follows: year one – $57,484 (75% of base rate); year two – $65,148 (85% of base rate); year three – $76,645 (base rate). A Master Patrol wage premium of 3% above base rate is available after nine years as a Transit Police Officer.

Job requirements include:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid PA Driver’s License.
  • Current Act 120 certification or candidate must successfully pass the Act 120 certification test prior to employment.
  • Successful completion of administered written police officer exam.
  • Successful completion of administered fitness exam.
  • Basic clerical skills.
  • Ability to observe and analyze situations objectively and respond appropriately.
  • Ability to handle emotionally charged situations.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Professional and effective communication skills to include:
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Successfully complete/maintain the following required training:
  • Yearly firearm qualifications with a department-authorized firearm.
  • Maintain Basic First Aid and CPR/AED Certification.
  • Yearly mandatory in-service training.
  • Job-specific training, as required.
  • Ability to work various shifts, pass days, weekends/holidays, as required.
  • This is a Safety-Sensitive position subject to all testing provisions under the Drug and Alcohol Policy, including random drug and alcohol testing. The person selected for this position may be required to be tested prior to being awarded the job.

TRANSIT DATA INTERN
($16 PER HOUR)

Pittsburgh Regional Transit is seeking a Transit Data Intern to, during the academic year, conduct data analysis projects assisting Port Authority of Allegheny County d/b/a Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) in determining how to best deploy transit resources across the system.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the Transit Analysis team through applying data manipulation, analysis and visualization in one or more of the following projects:
  • Analyze ridership patterns to inform service decisions.
  • Assess effectiveness of service changes, including monitoring ridership per trip, on time performance, and ridership by geographic area.
  • Develop interactive maps and dashboards that allow end users to explore transit data and discover insights.
  • Assist with internal and external reporting and data requests as needed.
  • Institute back-end data management processes such as automated Extract-Transform-Load operations and developing functions for commonly used data preparation techniques.

Job requirements include:

  • At minimum, candidates must be in their Junior or Senior year of study in a public policy, data analysis, computer science or related degree program. Recent graduates of same programs will also be considered.
  • Data manipulation skills, including ability to retrieve data, clean it, join to other datasets, and export in a clean format.
  • Strong data visualization skills that communicate a clear message to the end user.
  • Intellectual curiosity and the ability to identify and solve problems independently.
  • Interest and familiarity with public transit (even just as a rider) and the desire to make public services better for everyone.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Planning and organization.

Preferred attributes:

  • Candidate enrolled in or recently graduated from a master’s degree program in public policy, data analysis, computer science or related field.
  • Knowledge of a coding language such as R or Python.
  • Knowledge of a dashboarding tool such as Tableau or PowerBI.
  • Knowledge of a spatial analysis tool such as ArcGIS.
  • Ability to write basic SQL queries.
