Miss Universe Victoria Kjaer Theilvig is facing backlash after appearing to use the N-word in a viral TikTok video.
Theilvig, who was representing Demark, was crowned Miss Universe following the competition at Mexico City Arena on November 16.
During the event, Theilvig urged the crowd to “keep fighting … no matter where you come from.”
“I stand here today because I want a change, I want to make history, and that’s what I’m doing tonight,” she added.
Just days after the event, Theilvig shared a video from the top of the Empire State Building in New York where she used the N-word.
Video shows Theilvig wearing her Miss Universe tiara and crown as she sang along to the Jay-Z and Alicia Keys hit “Empire State of Mind.” Theilvig sang along to Jay-Z’s verse, which included the N-word, before panning the camera to the New York skyline.
Social media users immediately pointed out Theilvig’s use of the slur.
“Runner up, you’re up, this one is DONE,” one TikTok user commented.
“In the crown at that omg 😳,” another wrote.
As of Monday (November 25), Theilvig and the Miss Universe organization haven’t publicly addressed the incident.
Several social media users speculated that Theilvig’s N-word use would go unaddressed based on previous comments made by Miss Universe CEO Anne Jakrajutip. Jakrajutip previously faced backlash for saying diverse women “can compete, but they can’t win.”
When asked about the evolution of the Miss Universe pageant, the CEO recently said the competition doesn’t need to evolve any more, per Business Insider.
“Evolution?” Jakrajutip said during an interview with Theilvig. “Evolution? We have blond and blue eyes, so we’re coming to the ultimate evolution already. We don’t need any more evolution here. We already got the best here.”
Still, social media users are calling for Theilvig to apologize and be decrowned.
