:10—Legendary Boston Celtics player and coach Don Nelson passed away on Sunday, Aug. 9, at the age of 86. Nelson won five titles with Boston and went on to become the second-winningest coach in NBA history.
:09—Your Pittsburgh Steelers get things started for the 2026 season with an opening preseason game against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, Aug. 13. The game will be at home at Acrisure Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Of course not much to see here, but keep in mind the Packers are a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
:08—That being said, it certainly is assumed by most, if not all, that the preseason games are meaningless…not so, kind sir. Just ask the rookies and the traveling bodies for hire how important the preseason is when you’re trying to make the team.

:07—I’ll tell you this now, like I said before. The Steelers will win 12 games this year, and here’s why. #1. New coach, love him or not, it was time for Coach Tomlin to move into the announcer booth. His first ballot Hall of Fame induction career ended on a good/OK note. #2. The offensive line is reset and ready to go. #3. The wide receiver position is greatly improved…they actually have more than one receiver now! #4. At long last we have a new offensive and defensive coordinators—long, long, long overdue. (By the way, no one seems to talk about the importance of new coaches and the coordinator positions; it may prove to be the most important changes on the team.)
:06—Your Pittsburgh Pirates aren’t through…but whatever comes right before though…that’s where they’re at! With 40 regular season games to play, they will need to win 62-67 percent of the games to make the playoffs. That, boys and girls, just ain’t gonna happen!
:05—Just my opinion, not the Courier’s, and I ain’t too proud to beg…but if you’re born a boy, I say you play with boys. Likewise with girls. Not that they all don’t have a right to live their lives as they choose. But a 6’6″, 280-pound man should not be allowed to beat up on girls. Period, end of my story.
:04—Hey, this has nothing to do with nothing, but humor me with this survey. If you’ve been to KFC recently, text me at 412-902-5761 and tell me if Colonel Sanders wouldn’t turn over in his grave. He knows how they’ve jacked up his chicken. It’s so bad that poor Black folks won’t eat it, and I am one of those, so I know! Ha….ha….ha!
:03—About that Michael Jordan, LeBron James who is the G.O.A.T. argument, here’s this. Only four people in the history of the world have done the following: #1. Led the league in scoring for the regular season; #2. Made first-team all defense; #3. Won six NBA titles; #4. Named league MVP; and #5. Named tournament MVP each year of his championship run. Here they are: Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan, and Michael Jordan. Game over!!!
:02—As you get ready for the Steeler kickoff, keep the following football teams on your radar: Pitt Panthers, Duquesne Dukes, Robert Morris Colonials…all Western Pa. and City League H.S. teams, and be reminded that college and high school hoops are just around the corner. And I would give you my scoop on the Pens, but as you know, I don’t know a thing about them…but I am working on it!
:01—Don’t forget the Connie Hawkins Summer League Reunion party on Saturday, Aug. 15, 5-9 p.m. at Noblemen’s Lounge in Penn Hills with special guest David “Dr. Death” Trent and sharpshooter Tim Appleton. Call 412-902-5761 for info.
:00-00—Double Overtime: While most people think the WNBA is driving itself to self-annihilation, nothing could be further from the truth. Every league in every sport needs to have villains and the WNBA players refuse to not be part of that circus, as evidenced by their senseless on the court criminal behavior…more news at 11.
:00—GAME OVER.
