Students Nationwide Demand Reopened Investigation: Nolan Wells

Hundreds of Detroit students marched to Little Caesars Arena to demand that officials reopen the investigation into Nolan Wells’ death.

Students from Cass Technical High School and the Detroit School of Arts participated in the march on Monday (October 26), carrying signs calling for justice and chanting “No justice, no peace,” according to The Metro Detroit News.

The students called for greater transparency and accountability in the investigation, according to the report.

Wells disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip with friends to Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was found in the water on July 6, two days after he went missing.

Both state and independent autopsies listed his cause and manner of death as undetermined. The state medical examiner documented bruising on the back of Wells’ head, but the injuries were not considered fatal.

In September, a Mississippi grand jury declined to bring criminal charges in connection with Wells’ death, citing no credible evidence of criminal conduct. Wells’ family and attorney Ben Crump have continued to seek answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Detroit protest comes as students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have also organized protests demanding answers.

The Guardian reported that thousands of students at Atlanta University Center Consortium schools, including Spelman College, Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College, marched in solidarity with Wells’ family on October 1.

Students at Jackson State University in Mississippi also held a rally.

On Tuesday (October 27), Crump shared a social media post about students at Norfolk State University marching for Wells.

“When young people organize and demand answers, the world has no choice but to listen,” he wrote. “His family is not alone. Say his name. Nolan Wells!”
