Business Seminar
JAN. 6—The University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence will host “Leading Under Conditions of Uncertainty” from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the Duquesne Club, 325 6th Ave., Downtown. Scott Snook, a senior lecturer of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, will lead this seminar where new light on leadership in chaotic and complex situations where rapidity of decision making and the capacity to rally people are essential to success. Business Series
JAN. 9—The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh will host its Business Series from 12:15-1:15 p.m. at the Downtown & Business location, 612 Smithfield St., Downtown. The topic is “Developing a Corporate Mentoring Partnership.” Dana Gold, of Mentoring Partnership of South Western PA, will discuss the benefits of establishing corporate mentoring partnerships between local nonprofit organizations, corporations and small businesses. Companies utilize mentoring opportunities to boost workplace productivity, company morale and to give back to their communities. The event is free. The First Step
JAN. 10—The University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence will host “The First Step: Mechanics of Starting A Small Business from 7:30-10 a.m. at Pitt, Mervis Hall, South Bouquet Street and Roberto Clemente Drive, Oakland. The seminar will help individuals looking to start a small business begin to explore the size of their market, find out what marketing tools are needed to attract customers, learn about business structures, access helpful resources, learn about funding options and understand what one needs to formally establish their business. Women Leaders Breakfast Series
JAN. 10—The Chatham University Center for Women’s Entrepreneurship will host its Women Business Leaders Breakfast Series from 7:30-9 a.m. at Chatham University, James Laughlin Music Hall, Woodland Rd., Oakland. Sandy Cindrich and Linda Nyman, owners of Penn Brewery, will speak on the topic, “So You Want to Own a Brewery? How Two Women Have Tapped Into the Craft Beer Industry.” The “ladies of the lager” will address how and why they entered the industry; their move from working for large organizations to owning their own business; the biggest challenges they’ve faced; and their vision for the future. The Second Step
JAN. 14—The University of Pittsburgh Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence will host “The Second Step: Developing a Business Plan” from 7:30-10 a.m. at Pitt, Mervis Hall, South Bouquet Street and Roberto Clemente Drive, Oakland. The seminar will teach attendees about operational and production planning, conducting market research and creating financial spreadsheets to attract funding for one’s business.
