Authorities are still investigating the shooting deaths of three Black males that all took place within 24 hours.
It began just after 1 a.m. on July 13 with the fatal shooting of Lavar Rich, of New Kensington. Rich was found face down in a grassy area in the 1000 block of Brushton Avenue, in Homewood. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to a release by the Pittsburgh Department of Public Safety, a 9-1-1 caller reported hearing several shots and seeing three men running away. Rich’s body was later found.
Then, less than an hour later and on the other side of town, Pittsburgh police were dispatched to Allen and Manton Way in Knoxville, where they found Derrick Miles, 44, of McKees Rocks, shot and lying in the street next to his bicycle. He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Miles had reportedly gotten into an argument with at least one male outside of Stretches Bar on East Warrington Avenue when he was shot.
People in the area were unable to give a description of the actor or actors involved in the argument.
Sonya Toler, Pittsburgh public information officer, said that the authorities continue to investigate the two shootings.
Later in the evening, Kevin Gibson, 21, of Wilkinsburg, was found shot in a vehicle near Hill and Hays Streets, in Wilkinsburg, after he crashed into a parked SUV. It appears to have been a drive-by shooting. He was transported to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead.
Another person was also injured in that shooting.
As of this publication’s deadline, no one had been charged in any of the incidents.
The three shootings took place just one-day after an annual stop the violence walk was held. The walk, presented by the Kierra Keeps Caring Foundation, is held in honor of Sha’Vaughn Kierra Wallace, an inncent victim who gunned down in 2009.
