PITTSBURGH, PA – At approximately 12:52 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, Zone 1 Officers were on patrol in the Spring Garden searching for a felony warrant suspect. They noticed a white pickup truck on Spring Garden Avenue driving at a high rate of speed as the officers drew closer. Officers activated their emergency lights and sirens.
The wanted suspect—Gerald Sanders, 30, of Troy Hill—then led Officers on a pursuit through Spring Garden until he crashed through a fenced off construction site at Evergreen Road and Ivory Avenue in Summer Hill. Sanders fled on foot into a wooded area behind the construction site. Sanders was apprehended with the assistance of a police K9.
It was discovered that the truck was stolen prior to the pursuit. Sanders’ charges include theft by unlawful taking or disposition, receiving stolen property, reckless driving, fleeing or attempting to elude police, and valid driver’s license required. His arrest also clears two city bench warrants. Sanders was treated at the scene by Pittsburgh Paramedics and later transported to AGH for evaluation.
While at AGH, Saunders attempted to escape. While attempting to escape, he assaulted two AGH workers and two Police Officers. The AGH workers received minor injuries and were evaluated at the hospital. One Police Officer received injuries to his face, while the other Police Officer received injuries to his hand and face. They will be off work for an undetermined period of time.
Sanders now resides in Allegheny County Jail and faces the additional charges of aggravated assault, escape, and resisting arrest or other law enforcement.
