Grammy winner Bartz performs at Cabaret in Theater Square

Must read

TRAILBLAZING QUARTET—Gary Bartz has been known to many as a trailblazer in the music business from the moment he started playing with Art Blakey at his father’s jazz club in his hometown of Baltimore to playing his own music throughout 57 years as a professional musician. As if his Grammy Award© with McCoy Tyner in 2005 “Illuminations” wasn’t enough to carve out a place for Bartz in the jazz genre, he has broken the mold with more than 40 solo albums and more than 200 as a guest artist. (Photos by J.L. Martello) He recently performed in Pittsburgh at the Cabaret at Theater Square, 655 Penn Ave. Bartz graduated from the Baltimore City College high school and the Juilliard School; his break into the music industry came when filling in with Art Blakey’s band at his father’s club in Baltimore. Bartz has played with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Max Roach, McCoy Tyner, and Jackie McLean. His group, the Ntu Troop, combined soul, funk, African music, hard bop, and avant-garde jazz. Bartz was awarded the BNY Mellon Jazz 2015 Living Legacy Award, presented at a special ceremony at The Kennedy Center. He currently teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, when not touring. Above Gary Bartz and his quartet performing on stage. (Photos by J. L. Martello)
