by PublicSource Reporters

The Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] reported 77 additional COVID-19 infections and one COVID-related fatality Saturday, bringing the tally to 9,359 cases and 284 deaths since March 14.

The new cases come from 1,321 tests conducted from Aug. 10 to 14. More than half of the new cases were among people younger than 50. The new fatality was an individual in their 70s who died on Aug. 9.

County health officials also reported 11 additional hospitalizations. To date, there have been 777 past and present hospitalizations in the county.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] reported 850 new infections and 20 fatalities Saturday, bringing the statewide counts to 123,800 cases and 7,465 deaths.

Each region of the state has seen a significant increase in cases among younger Pennsylvanians, specifically 19- to 24-year-olds. Still, personal care and nursing homes continue to bear the brunt of the deaths, with residents representing 68% of all COVID-related fatalities in the state.

Roughly 8,881, or 7.2% of all infections, are among healthcare workers.

According to data published by the state on Friday afternoon, the percent-positivity of tests across Pennsylvania dropped slightly from 4.1% last week to 4% currently.

In tracing 24,468 positive cases reported between July 13 and Aug. 11, the state said less than half of patients contacted answered whether they had visited a business. Out of the group that answered, 1,499 people (13%) said they had done so, with about half of them saying they had been to a restaurant within 14 days of experiencing symptoms.

The latest information from the state’s COVID-19 dashboard is available here. County-specific information and a statewide map are available on the COVID-19 Data Dashboard.
