Health Department Director Dr. Debra Bogen lifted her order Thursday limiting outdoor gatherings to 50 people and imposing stricter restaurant restrictions than the state.

“Our case counts continue to remain relatively low and we are doing much better than other areas of the country,” said Bogen in a press release.

State orders regarding face coverings, mandatory telework and business occupancy restrictions, among others, remain in place, the county said. Click here for more information on state mitigation efforts.

The Allegheny County Department of Health [ACHD] reported 60 additional COVID- 19 infections Thursday and no new COVID-related fatalities. The newly reported cases bring the total count since March 14 to 11,927 infections.

The case tally released Thursday came from 1,140 tests conducted from September 14 through September 23. The new infections were among patients aged 7 months to 91 years old, with the media age being 35. Roughly 70% were people younger than 50.

To date, the county has had 376 deaths and 1,191 people hospitalized because of the virus.

On Wednesday, Wednesday that they will continue to enforce size limits on gatherings, despite a federal judge’s decision that some of the state’s pandemic mitigation efforts are unconstitutional.

“I encourage people not to get caught up in the political battles that tend to go on,” county Executive Rich Fitzgerald said at a Wednesday press conference. “We’re going to continue to remain vigilant here and make sure that everybody continues to cooperate.”

“I am pleased to report that our case counts continue to run relatively low,” said county Health Department Director Dr. Debra Bogen, noting that her agency has seen little transmission among college students, from child care, or due to K-12 schools. She thanked community members for wearing masks and following physical distancing recommendations.

Bogen sounded one note of concern: The number of tests conducted across the county has dropped to about 670 per day in recent days.

Still, compared to other parts of the country, Allegheny County is doing well in terms of testing, fatalities and hospitalizations, Fitzgerald said. “We’ve done a great job here compared to other places and we want to continue that,” he said.

With Halloween a little over a month away, Bogen encouraged those who trick-or-treat to do so “as safely as possible” by wearing cloth masks, traveling in small groups and using hand sanitizer.
