Urban Academy: Charter School Pioneers

The Urban Academy is the school that pioneered the charter movement in the city of Pittsburgh.

Since 1997, the school has committed to engaging our students, their families, and the greater community to develop smart and kind global citizens who understand the importance of academic excellence and Black people worldwide.

Our staff is committed to integrating Black culture, traditions, and history into our instructional landscape. We expect greatness from our students, and we remind them that their greatness is rooted in the legacy of King & Queens.

With an extended school year, the Urban Academy has ten more instructional days than other schools and districts. Our scholars engage in grade-level academic programs that encourage each student’s growth and success, as they meet and exceed the Pennsylvania Core Standards. Even during a pandemic, our school has maintained an unrelenting focus on academic excellence, rigor, and pride for all students.
