Overtime: Pittsburgh, the City of Champions?

Must read

:10—Let’s start with your Pittsburgh Pirates since they started with us first. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the city’s first major professional championship by winning the 1909 World Series. They went on to win four more…1925, 1960, 1971 and the world renowned “We Are Fam-i-lee” series in 1979 with my good friend Willie “Pops” Stargell and The Lumber Company. Since then, suggesting they’ve run cold would be the understatement of the century. But with Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Braxton Ashcraft, Bubba Chandler and Carmen Mlodzinski and the new “Cone Crew” featuring Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds and rookie sensation Konnor Griffin, they are closer to the possibility than they have been in the past four decades.

:09—Your Pittsburgh Steelers are another animal all together. They’re going to hit the sellout button no matter what. But keep in mind, their non-losing seasons are getting harder to swallow year by year. They brought home the Lombardi in 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005 and 2008. We can thank the team of the decade…1974-1979…for keeping the flame burning and the ’05 and ’08 teams were no slouch, but no matter how much cole slaw and fries you put on a sandwich, 18 years is a long time. New coach, new system, new game plan.  Now we get to see where the blame was or is. But don’t ya miss the good ole days when you already knew the Steelers would win, you only needed to know by how much. (RIP my brothers, the greatest of the great…Franco Harris, Dwight White, L. C. Greenwood, Ernie Holmes, Mike Wagner, Sam Davis WOW!)

:08—You already know…I only know enough about hockey to fill up a tablespoon. But I know this, your Penguins should have defeated the Philly Flyers and could have been in position to return the gold to the Steel City. That being said, I expect they’ll take one more stab at it with the Big Three, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, and the new coach Dan Muse before they start scraping the ice! (What are you talking about, I knew the names, I didn’t have to Google it…wait, what?)

:07—I am going to give ya what I got on this one. Your Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC have the honor of being the only current world title holder in the ‘Burgh. On November 22, 2025, the “Hounds” beat FC Tulsa to win the USL Championship, 5-3, in a penalty shootout.  their first title in their 26-year history.  (Yeah, you know I Googled that…shut up, you didn’t know either, oh please just stop!)

:06—Now here’s the one that will probably always be “The One!”  In 1968, our Pittsburgh Pipers defeated the New Orleans Buccaneers at the then-spectacular Civic Arena 4 games to 3 by a final game score of 122-113. The Pipers were led by the greatest player on the planet at the time, Connie Hawkins, who averaged 31 points and 12 rebounds over the seven-game series and recorded 20 points and 13 rebounds in game seven of the series, pretty much on one leg after suffering a near career ending knee injury in game 4. You know what they say, “You can’t stop a Hawk from flyin’!”  (You knew I knew this one, didn’t you?)  (Miss ya, love ya Hawk!)

:05—The Pittsburgh Passion women’s tackle pro football team has won three major league national championships in 2007, 2014 and 2015.  Pound for pound, one of the greatest team operations in the city’s history. Superior ownership, management, leadership and players speak to their success on and off the field.

:04—A few miscellaneous calculations…Duquesne University won the National Invitation (NIT) Championship in 1955, and was in the NCAA Final Four in 1940.  Pitt won national football titles in 1915, 1916, 1918, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936, 1937 and 1976. Neither Pitt men’s nor women’s basketball teams have won national titles. For what it’s worth, the Helms Athletic Foundation recognized Pitt as national champions in 1928 and 1930…What? What? What?
