Guest Editorial… Ray Rice video brings new attention to domestic violence

Editorial2
The release of a horrific video showing Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking out his former fiancee, who is now his wife, has brought new media attention to the longstanding problem of domestic abuse.
The Ravens terminated Rice’s contract last Monday after a graphic video emerged of him punching Janay Palmer, now Janay Rice, in an elevator in Atlantic City in February, leaving her motionless on the floor. He then dragged her unconscious body from the elevator.
The video raised fresh questions about NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s handling of the situation; in July, the NFL suspended Rice for only two games.
The Ravens, who had not previously disciplined Rice in any public way, announced last Monday that they terminated Rice’s contract, after the release of the video. The NFL, which had been rightfully widely criticized for not penalizing Rice more strongly, has now suspended him indefinitely.
The handling of the Ray Rice case by the Ravens and the NFL smacks of hypocrisy.
