Latonya Owens became fascinated with photography at a young age.
“I always enjoyed looking at old family photos,” said Owens. “When I was in middle school, I asked my grandmother to buy me a camera so I could take pictures of my classmates. It’s always been a passion and love.”
Owens turned that love into her business, Blessed Hands by Latonya Photography. She specializes in family portraits, headshots, engagement photos, and even portfolio-building for models. The business name draws upon Owens’s spirituality.
“Whatever I put my hands to do, God blesses it,” said Owens.
Owens has noticed that the pandemic has created an increased demand for people to document their loved ones and celebrate achievements. With prom and in-person graduation ceremonies being canceled, many turned to Owens for senior portraits. Prior to 2020, Owens only shot eight seniors. That number jumped to nearly 60 last year.
“I think the pandemic has brought back a love for photography, for capturing moments because of the times,” said Owens. She has seen firsthand how precious capturing a family bond is.
“I took a picture of a family in May of 2020, and the mother passed away unexpectedly a few months later. I try to say, hey, you never know when that person’s last day is going to be, so if you feel the urge to get a picture taken. If you feel like you want to gather the family, do it.”
As a photographer, Owens’s ultimate reward is providing work that will stand the test of time. And she takes pride in providing an affordable service.
“Being able to capture moments and have my art displayed in someone’s home, that person will always have a piece of me.”
