Kolor-N-Kiln Pottery is a Black-owned, family-operated pottery studio located at The Mall Robinson.
“My daughter, Alyson Blackburn, is my business partner,” said co-owner Jeaniane Blackburn. “When she was younger, her and I would go off to different pottery studios throughout the city of Pittsburgh and do this type of activity, mother and daughter.”
Blackburn added, “She always wanted to start her own business. I was retiring from my corporate job, and she was graduating. She came back here…she’s like mom I thought we were going to be our own bosses and low and behold Kolor-N-Kiln was born.”
In addition to pottery, Kolor-N-Kiln offers ceramic painting, glassware, wood cutouts, instructional canvas classes, and mosaics.
“We are most known for having a studio that you can come in and unleash your creativity. We do so many different mediums of art…We have so many different things that when people come in, they’re sometimes overwhelmed with how many options they have,” said Blackburn.
Considering how her business initially started, Blackburn is proud of where Kolor-N-Kiln is today.
“When we started out, we were in 1100 square feet of small studio and now we’re in 5700 square feet at The Mall Robinson. We can’t ask for anything better than that,” said Blackburn. “We have a lot to be proud of. We made it through the pandemic. We have been challenged especially being a black-owned company. We have been challenged in more ways than we had ever hoped for, and we made it.”
Kolor-N-Kiln also hosts a variety of gatherings, from birthday parties, to graduations, to bachelorette parties. They have a large enough space to where they do not take reservations. You can walk in at any point and have a great experience.
Kolor-N-Kiln services youth as well. Throughout the academic year, they accept different school invitations for workshops and after-school programs. Then in the summer, they host an annual summer camp in July for kids ages 5-12. For more information, visit their website.
